Plateau's Phenakistoscope

Plateau's Phenakistoscope is an early animation device invented by the Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau around 1832. Its principle is that different phases of motion are placed on a disk, which, when rotated rapidly, combine to create the illusion of smooth motion. The disc is equipped with holes through which the viewer looks into the mirror.
